BEFORE YOU BUY A PUPPY remember that you are taking on an awesome responsibility. Puppies grow up into dogs and need love, training and lots of attention...just like your kids do.  Make sure you have researched the breed you are thinking of purchasing and make sure that he will fit into your life style and personality. Dogs cost money...food...vet bills...etc, and lots of time. It can sometimes be overwhelming. Also consider adopting an unwanted pup/dog from your local shelter or at least help them out with contributions of your time or money.
